While the basic idea of sectional form can be stretched pretty far, it’s not uncommon to hear songs with additional types of sections. Pre-verses, post-choruses, breakdowns, ad-libs — there are plenty of examples of alternate forms.

You’ve just bought a 180-gram audiophile pressing of your favorite album on vinyl. Getting home, you slide it lovingly from the sleeve. As your boutique turntable spins gently, you carefully place the stylus at the record’s edge, settle back on your beanbag with $400 headphones comforting your head, and savor the music just as the artist intended.
In this case, the B♭ is the 9th, even though it looks like it should be called the 2nd. Tensions get bumped up an octave (2nd becomes 9th, 4th becomes 11th, and 6 becomes 13th).
The best and cheapest ones I’ve found are the Digitech RV-7 and the Electro Harmonix Cathedral. Both have reverse settings but the RV-7 is much smaller, in case you need to save space on your pedalboard! If you’re playing your favorite chords through this effect they will sound like psychedelic, dreamy synthesized strings, especially when you’re playing a guitar that has a whammy. First try it with your clean sound. Yum! And if you put it through a distortion pedal… BAM! Shoegaze!
Seriously — it’s so easy to think you know a song perfectly, but then suddenly you have to play it with headphones on and an annoying click in your ear and the whole thing falls apart. When you’re practicing, try to replicate the environment you’ll encounter at your recording studio as much as possible. It’ll help worlds when you actually get in there.

This vinyl-related project couldn’t be more different from the one above. Until recently, Jesu Berkeley was just a talented dad. Now, he’s an educator and community activist with a dream to provide a creative space for students and at-risk youth to learn about DJing, turntablism, and scratchology!
Soundfly welcomes new voices each month to offer unique perspectives, shine a light on unexpected musical worlds, and help our readers find their sound.
For example, in Spotify for Artists, you can see detailed stats for your top 200 songs. You can filter by date range to see whether certain promotional efforts or live shows have correlated with your Spotify activity. You can also track the total streams and listeners of all of your tracks, combined (but note that this “all-time” graph can only go as far back as 2015).
Apple Music for Artists allows musicians to see their stats across both Apple Music and iTunes. The platform is still in beta as of this writing, though, so unfortunately it’s not open to all artists just yet. In the meantime, you can sign up here to reserve your spot.
Known as “the kiss heard round the world” during Madonna’s mashup performance of “Like a Virgin” and “Hollywood” at the 2003 VMAs, something pretty unexpected happened when all three divas were onstage together. The three-way kiss. Just look at that quick cut to Spears’ ex-boyfriend, a young Justin Timberlake, and watch his awkward reaction. Yup, that’s how everyone felt. It’s still weird to watch this after so many years.
