A great soundproofing technique my bandmate leverages is to use two separate rooms for recording. One room contains the microphones and the source of the music, and the other room contains the recording gear (and thus any noise the computer or tape machines may themselves create).

“Psycho”: After 15 weeks in the Top 5, this song finally made it to #1 for a week. Good going, everyone. The form here is pretty clear-cut; it’s almost a palindrome. It’s just that the two verses have our singers doing their own thing. Like, Post Malone does this isolated line for the second half of his verse, just his own thing not to be repeated. This song, combined with others in this study, like “Look Alive,” also illustrates how important the beat is in determining the subdivision of the tempo.

Senior’s advice is well-written, specific enough to be incredibly useful, and general enough to apply to any DAW or any genre an engineer finds themselves working in.

It’s like how they say “we eat with our eyes first” when we go to restaurants — presentation matters. Some bands and musicians feel that this can cheapen their music, or they don’t like “playing those games.” I call those people naïve.

My sister is a TV comedy writer, and she once told me all she wants to do when she gets home is watch CSI or some other dark, dramatic show — because all she does all day is write jokes! I’ve noticed a similar pattern (have you?). When I’m done with a long string of shows, all I want to do is listen to nothing. But I found a loophole for this: Listen to the stuff you listened to as a teenager or when you first started getting into music. For me that’s ’90s R&B and neo-soul. Give me Ms. Lauryn Hill or Destiny’s Child and I’m instantly transported to a happy place, where I can dance around like a dummy and not care about anything.

“No Tears Left To Cry”: There’s so much tonal candy here, we had to have a whole public hearing about it when the song came out: the Kabalevsky-esque interplay between major and minor scales in the melody, the Vsus chord, and these yummy jewels-in-the-necklace add2 chords that make up the main chord-riff. It’s the add2 in the major tonic chord (I) that softens and disguises the tonal change between major and minor, by the way. The intro to this song is really two intros that use chorus material — first as is, then she slows it down from 122 to 100 BPM. Then the second intro is an odd 14 bars long, before we finally get to the verse.

The last important aspect of phase concerns signal processing. And no, I’m not really talking about the guitar pedal effect called “phaser” — if you’re using a lot of plugins, each one that you introduce into your mix will affect the phase. Each instance of digital processing adds latency to the signal, even if only a few hundredths of a second. Many DAWs and plugin manufacturers attempt various compensations for this, but regardless, it’s important to be aware that it’s always going be there, and in some cases, unavoidably so.

These are just examples, but you get the point. Find the free time in your calendar, pull out your phone, and put stuff in your calendar app (or a paper calendar if you still use one of those). And don’t forget to set a reminder on your phone. This way, you’re holding your future self accountable to be efficient with your music time.

In 1972, John Fogerty left Creedence Clearwater Revival and their label, Fantasy Records. After he released his hit solo album Centerfield (1985), label head Saul Zaentz of Fantasy Records sued Fogerty for plagiarizing himself. Zaentz claimed that the single “The Old Man Down the Road” infringed upon “Run Through the Jungle,” a song that he had originally recorded with CCR under contract with Fantasy Records in 1970. Though he was not found guilty, it’s pretty novel that Fogerty was sued for sounding too much like himself!
